Charles V married Isabel of Portugal, born in Lisbon in 1503. She was the second daughter of Manuel I of Portugal and his second wife Maria of Aragon and Castile (aunt of Charles V, therefore Charles and Isabella were cousins). She married Charles V in 1526, this marriage was very important for the Hispanic monarchy from the economic point of view, since Isabella brought a large dowry. Although the marriage was for political reasons, it is said that they were a happy couple, and after Isabella's death in 1539 due to the birth of her last child, who also died, Charles did not remarry. Isabella was not Queen of Spain, as the incumbent and owner was still alive, Joanna the Mad (she would die in 1555). However, she acted as governor of the Spanish kingdoms during her husband's travels in Europe.
